2009-07-11: DeNamiK releases DeNamiK LoadGen 2.0

Validating the performance of a Citrix, Microsoft Terminal Server (RDP) and Provision Networks farm was, until now, never straightforward as it should be. Today's load and stress test tools for Citrix, Microsoft Terminal Server (RDP) en Provision Networks farms are either very complicated or way too expensive. Finally, this has changed.

Massive load and stress tests, either in test or production environments, are now easier than ever. Use your own user action scripts together with DeNamiK LoadGen or record and create user action script with the DeNamiK User Action Framework. No changes to the Citrix, Microsoft Terminal Server (RDP) and Provision Networks servers have to be made. Just make sure you have created a couple of user action test scripts with your favorite scripting product or the DeNamiK User Action Framework and have enough workstations available to launch the sessions. With the DeNamiK LoadGen - Director you can manage the LoadBots, create your scenario's, fire away ICA or RDP sessions in a manageable fashion to properly evaluate your Citrix, Microsoft Terminal Server (RDP) and Provision Networks environment and also get a report containing the passed stages of the ICA or RDP sessions.

Since release 1.2 of the DeNamiK LoadGen it's possible to test your complete infrastructure! From VDI to SCCM, Altiris or client-server environments: you can use the DeNamiK LoadGen to load and stress test every Windows based environment available. We call this 'Local Client' loadtesting and it will turn the LoadBots machines into smart load generators. User actions scripts or executables can be started from the LoadBots.

With the DeNamiK LoadGen release 2.0 we have integrated DUAF!

With the DeNamiK LoadGen release 2.0 we have integrated DeNamiK User Action Framework for Citrix load and stress testing! As you might know; only logons on a Citrix, Terminal Server or Provision Networks farm will not do the loadtest. It's necessary to simulate user actions. DeNamiK developed the DeNamiK User Action Framework (DUAF) which is now available in the all of the editions of the DeNamiK LoadGen, even the 25 user freeware version!

There are two versions of DUAF available in the DeNamiK LoadGen 2.0 release:

  • DUAF for Citrix: integrated recorder and script builder (VB.NET), the scripts created are automatically launched via the LoadBots when you run a load or stress test
  • DUAF for Terminal Server: external recorder and set of scripts based on AutoIt. The DeNamiK LoadGen logs in the users by setting up a Teminal Server or Provision Networks session. The compiled DUAF scenario script can be launched as an executable file after login.

DUAF is a flexible and free framework and very well suited for simulating end-user actions as performed in real-life production environments. In this way load testing will be more valuable because of the added load to the Terminal Servers to make their resource usage more realistic. Besides that, it is also possible for the tester to perform system tests to cover more performance aspects of a company’s infrastructure besides Terminal Server alone.

For example:

  • Mailing
  • Printing
  • NAS I/O
  • SAN I/O
  • Database
    Etcetera.

What's changed in LoadGen 2.0

In the 2.0 release of the DeNamiK LoadGen the following features and items are added or changed:

  • DUAF for Citrix integration
  • Use ICA files to start the load or stress test (user specific items are tattooed on the ICA file)
  • Performance counter process is more robust
  • Reports are build in XML, so it's easy to create charts from a spreadsheet application (i.e. Microsoft Excel)
  • LoadGen internal processes are stabilized

2009-04-06: DeNamiK releases sftImport 2.3

Today DeNamiK released the 2.3 version of the DeNamiK sftImport tool.

With the 2.3 release DeNamiK introduce support to the upcoming version of Microsoft App-V 4.5. After many requests we also introduced the ‘delete’ possibility and it’s now possible to query Softgrid packages. With release 2.2 we moved over from .Net Framework 1.1 to 2.0. You must install .Net Framework 2.0 or 3.0 to resume working with the new version of sftImport. If you work with Softgrid 3.x you can work with this version or still work with version 2.1.2714.15448. But be aware; we will not continue to support version 2.1.2714.15448 anymore!

2006-05-25: An in-depth review of DeNamiK's free LoadGen stress test utility

Tim Mangan, founder of TMurgent Technologies, wrote an excellent 18-page technical review based on the very first beta version of the DeNamiK LoadGen, as well as discussions with the product architects on what we should expect with the final release.

From the paper summary:

It was surprising for the first Beta of a new product to automate so much of the testing in my chaotic multi-faceted lab. Congratulations especially go to DeNamiK for handling a mixed 2000 and 2003 Active Directory Domain without having to work around it. DeNamiK’s goal of replacing the CTSK as an affordable test platform with something usable and scalable for massive testing is clearly met with this product. When the final release becomes available I expect it will be a welcome addition to the lab

You can find the white paper on BrianMadden.com and on TMurgent.com.

2006-05-07: Beta program now in progress

The DeNamiK LoadGen is currently in the Release Candidate phase, and before releasing version 1.0, we would like to have a final beta test. So as I mentioned in the presentation at BriForum we need your help. If you would like to help us out reply at this mail, we will send you the download location of the program, with a temporary license valid till the end of may.

When you decide to join the beta program of the DeNamiK LoadGen we will ask you the following:

  • You will be required to spend at least 3–5 hours a week testing the DeNamiK LoadGen during the product beta cycle. The cycle is expected to last 2-4 weeks
  • You need to complete testing of the product within one (1) week after you receive it
  • You need to report all problems you come across when using the product. We also are interested in any suggestions you have to improve the DeNamiK LoadGen
  • You will be provided with a download link to the DeNamiK LoadGen (new versions are put on the download site ones a week) and report any problems you find through e-mail.
